May/25/2021 PokerStars forbids those from California from playing for real money on their website. Alternatives include Americas Cardroom , available to play for real money in all 50 states.
Legalization in CA could alter the online poker landscape in the US. Major operators including PokerStars, partypoker, WSOP.com, and others would be interested in moving into the state. California legalization could also spur other high-population states to get on the bandwagon as well, especially if interstate compacts are allowed.
2015 in review. There were four online poker bills introduced in California in 2015. Assemblyman Mike Gatto’s AB 9, Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer’s AB 167, Assemblyman Adam Gray’s AB 431, and State Senator Isadore Hall III’s SB 267, which was a carbon copy of Gray’s AB 431. While progress has been slow, 2015 wasn’t all for naught.
Unfortunately, California still hasn’t legalized online gambling. However, even though California residents will not see sportsbooks, online casinos, and poker platforms in 2021, next year might just be the one. Three ballot initiatives to legalize sports betting with support from various political interests are circulating in the state. Any of them could end up on the ballot in November 2022 if they manage to collect 997,000 signatures from registered voters or achieve a majority vote.
California is the largest state in the Union by population, and it isn't even close. With 39.5 million people calling themselves citizens of this great state, it is no surprise to learn that the largest amount of player traffic to US-friendly poker sites emanates from The Golden State.
